Harley é o maior furacão a atingir os Estados Unidos em 12 anos

As autoridades do Texas emitiram um alerta à população por causa da passagem do Furacão Harley na costa central do estado, onde estão localizadas as cidades de Corpus Christi e Houston.

Já foram emitidos avisos para que os moradores de pelo menos sete condados deixem suas casas em busca de abrigos para se proteger dos ventos que, segundo a Central Nacional de Furacões, podem chegar a 170 quilômetros por hora. As autoridades determinaram que a saída é obrigatória, devido ao risco de enchentes e inundações.

A tempestade foi classificada inicialmente na categoria 2, na escala de intensidade Saffir-Simpson, mas agora os meteorologistas já dizem que o furacão pode atingir a categoria 3. A escala varia de 1 a 5. Um furacão na categoria 1 é o mais fraco com pequenos danos materiais e prejuízos maiores a construções precárias.

Na categoria 3 há risco de grandes danos materiais e mortes em regiões bastante habitadas.

Uma grande preocupação é que nessa área funcionam algumas das maiores refinarias de petróleo dos Estados Unidos (EUA). Há risco de descargas elétricas e explosões.

Segundo a imprensa americana, a ligeira alta de preços da gasolina, registrada esta semana no país, já foi um efeito da previsão da passagem do furacão.

Desde 2005, os Estados Unidos não têm um furacão nessa categoria. O último foi o Wilma, que passou pela Flórida em outubro daquele ano. O Wilma provocou 87 mortes e ocorreu dois meses depois da passagem do Katrina em Nova Orleans, que causou a morte de mais de 1.800 pessoas.

O volume de chuvas e tempestades trazidas pelo Harley pode chegar a 15 trilhões de galões de água, segundo as estimativas meteorológicas. A imprensa local mostra moradores em busca de alimentos para se refugiar em abrigos.
