O presidente dos Estados Unidos Barack Obama fez um discurso de despedida na noite desta terça-feira (9), em Chicago, a poucos dias de deixar o cargo após oito anos de mandato. Durante quase uma hora de fala, Obama pediu aos americanos que se unam para lutar contra os desafios que ameaçam a democracia norte-americana. Em um discurso emocionado transmitido para todo o país, ele alertou o povo americano que uma mudança nos rumos do país só ocorrem “quando as pessoas comuns se envolvem para exigi-la”. No próximo dia 20, Obama deixará a presidência dos Estados Unidos. O presidente eleito Donald Trump assumirá no seu lugar.
Obama falou no centro de convenções McCormick Place, o maior dos Estados Unidos, perante 20 mil pessoas. Em alguns momentos, os aplausos soaram tão alto que Obama teve de interromper a fala e se esforçar para continuar.
O teor do discurso de Obama focou mais no futuro do que nos feitos alcançados nos últimos oito anos. Em alguns momentos, Obama lembrou conquistas alcançadas e disse que a população ainda precisa superar os desafios raciais, políticos e econômicos existentes. O presidente norte-americano disse que é possível vencer os desafios. “Depois de oito anos como presidente, eu ainda acredito nisso”. E prosseguiu: “E não é apenas a minha crença, é o coração palpitante da nossa ideia americana – a nossa ousada experiência de autogoverno”.
Sobre as questões raciais que ainda incomodam o povo norte-americano, Obama disse que houve um progresso significativo nessa tema nas últimas décadas. Mas, segundo ele, esse progresso não foi suficiente para superar todos os problemas. Obama defendeu que acreditar na superação seria “irrealista”.
“Temos de defender as leis contra a discriminação, na contratação [trabalhista], na habitação, na educação e no sistema de justiça criminal. Isso é o que exige nossa Constituição e os ideais mais elevados. Mas as leis sozinhas não serão suficientes. Os corações precisam mudar “, disse Obama.
Além da questão racial, Obama citou a defesa dos direitos de outras minorias que vivem no país. “Para negros e outras minorias, [nosso desafio] significa amarrar nossas próprias lutas pela Justiça aos desafios que muitas pessoas neste país enfrentam – não apenas os refugiados, os imigrantes, os pobres rurais, os transgêneros americanos, mas também os de meia-idade. O homem branco, de fora, pode parecer que tem todas as vantagens, mas ele viu seu mundo revirado por mudanças econômicas, culturais e tecnológicas”.
Obama falou também sobre as desigualdades econômicas. “A desigualdade absoluta também é corrosiva para nossos ideiais democráticos”, disse ao criticar a crescente separação entre ricos e pobres nos Estados Unidos. “Enquanto a parte superior de um 1% acumulou uma maior parcela de riqueza e renda, muitas das nossas famílias, nas cidades e municípios rurais, foram deixadas para trás. O trabalhador de fábrica despedido, a garçonete e os trabalhadores de saúde que lutam para pagar as contas – convencidos de que o jogo é fixado contra eles, que seu governo serve apenas os interesses dos poderosos – isso é uma receita para mais cinismo e polarização em nossa política “, disse ele.
Ao citar suas filhas e a primeira-dama, Michelle Obama, o presidente se emocionou e agradeceu o apoio da família durantes os oito anos de mandato. Ele encerrou o discurso repetindo a frase que o consagrou em sua primeira campanha eleitoral: sim, nós podemos (Yes, we can).
