Cientistas desenvolvem impressora 3D capaz de fabricar tecidos para transplantes em humanos

O futuro em que impressoras 3D possam imprimir órgãos e tecidos humanos para eliminar longas filas de transplantes pode estar mais próximo. Cientistas americanos implantaram com sucesso em animais estruturas de tecido vivo fabricadas com uma “sofisticada e melhorada” impressora 3D, de acordo com um estudo publicado nesta segunda-feira pela revista britânica Nature Biotechnology.
A pesquisa, desenvolvida pelo Instituto de Medicina Regenerativa Wake Forest, na Carolina do Norte, representa um avanço para a medicina regenerativa, pois sugere que estas estruturas podem ser futuramente implantadas em humanos. Os cientistas conseguiram imprimir tecidos cartilaginosos, ósseos e musculares que, após serem implantados em modelos animais, amadureceram até se transformarem em tecido funcional.
“Esta nova impressora de tecidos e órgãos é um avanço importante em nosso objetivo de fabricar tecido de reposição para pacientes”, explicou Anthony Atala, um dos autores do estudo.
Para imprimir os tecidos, os pesquisadores utilizaram células vivas como “tinta”, que se transformaram em tecidos e foram implantadas nos animais. O processo, chamado Sistema Integrado de Impressão de Tecido e Órgão (ITOP, na sigla em inglês), foi desenvolvido pela equipe de cientistas durante os últimos dez anos e usa materiais biodegradáveis para criar a “forma” do tecido e géis à base d’água que sustentam as células.
Para isso, os especialistas otimizaram a “tinta” que sustenta as células para promover seu crescimento e imprimiram um cruzamento de microcanais nas estruturas. Esses canais permitem que os nutrientes e o oxigênio presentes no animal sejam integrados às estruturas impressas para mantê-las vivas e incentivem o desenvolvimento do sistema de vasos sanguíneos.
Durante os testes, foram impressas orelhas em tamanho humano que, dois meses depois de implantadas nos animais, tinham desenvolvido vasos sanguíneos e cartilagem. O tecido muscular impresso ganhou a formação de nervos duas semanas após o implante e, quando fragmentos do crânio foram implantados, o tecido ósseo se desenvolveu em cinco meses.
De acordo com os cientistas, esses resultados apontam que esses tecidos têm o tamanho, a solidez e a funcionalidade adequadas para serem utilizadas em humanos, futuramente. Segundo Atala, a bioimpresora 3D pode fabricar “tecido estável em escala humana de qualquer forma e tamanho”, o que permitiria “imprimir tecido vivo e estruturas de órgãos para a implantação cirúrgica”.
Por enquanto, as impressoras 3D não reproduzem estruturas com tamanho ou solidez necessárias para serem implantadas no corpo humano. Os cientistas esperam que a precisão desta nova impressora 3D poderá, em pouco tempo, replicar fielmente os tecidos e órgãos mais complexos do corpo humano
“Nossos resultados indicam que o uso de uma ‘biotinta’ combinada, unido ao desenvolvimento de ‘microcanais’, cria o entorno adequado para manter as células vivas e favorecer seu crescimento e o dos tecidos”, afirmou o pesquisador.
Outra característica do ITOP é sua capacidade para processar dados de tomografias e de ressonâncias magnéticas e “fabricar tecido à medida” de cada paciente.
Para o estudo, os cientistas contaram com financiamento do Instituto de Medicina Regenerativa da Forças Armadas Americanas, que pretende aplicar esta tecnologia em soldados feridos em combate, dada a escassez de doadores de tecidos para implantes.
