Atividade humana acelera degradação dos oceanos, alerta ONU

A degradação dos oceanos aumentou drasticamente nos últimos anos devidos ao impacto acumulado de atividades humanas como a poluição, a pesca excessiva e as emissões de gases nocivos, advertiu nesta quinta-feira (8) a Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU).

“O futuro dos nossos oceanos está ameaçado pela mudança climática, a acidificação, a contaminação, as práticas pesqueiras insustentáveis e destrutivas e a falta de capacidade para fazer frente a estas ameaças”, assegurou o secretário-geral, António Guterres, em um comunicado no Dia Mundial dos Oceanos.

Durante a Conferência dos Oceanos, realizada na sala da Assembleia Geral das Nações Unidas em Nova York, Guterres lembrou que o uso sustentável dos recursos marítimos é “crítico” para alcançar objetivos ecológicos e econômicos, em um momento em que a capacidade dos oceanos de absorver o impacto das atividades humanas “está muito perto ou chegou a seu limite”.

“Os oceanos regulam o clima, geram oxigênio e nos dão os ecossistemas, a energia e os minerais. A vida que emana da sua superfície e ao longo das costas é uma fonte de alimentos e medicamentos”, destacou o chefe da ONU.

O evento de três horas contou com discursos de governantes, cientistas e membros das ONGs que buscam conscientizar sobre a responsabilidade no cuidado do meio ambiente marítimo.

Herança comum

O presidente da Assembleia  Geral da ONU, Peter Thomson, enfatizou a “necessidade urgente” de preservar os recursos oceânicos e de corrigir “as doenças” que o ser humano provocou, através da implementação de medidas de luta contra a contaminação marinha e as atividades pesqueiras prejudiciais.

“O oceano não é coisa de certas pessoas ou países; é uma herança comum da humanidade que deve ser conservado e gerido de forma sustentável para a posteridade”, acrescentou.

Por sua vez, o conservacionista Brian Skerry, da National Geographic, que assegurou ter viajado aos cantos “mais remotos e desabitados do planeta”, ressaltou que a população de peixes grandes caiu mais de 90% devido ao excesso da atividade pesqueira com fins comerciais.

“Caminhei entre restos de plástico no que antes eram praias limpas e cristalinas (…) Os problemas do oceano nunca tinham sido tão evidentes, são uma sentença de morte para a fauna marinha”, lamentou Skerry.
