Sudão do Sul corre risco de enfrentar “catástrofe de fome”, alerta ONU

Cerca de 4,9 milhões de pessoas no Sudão do Sul, o correspondente a mais de um terço da população do país, localizado no Nordeste da África, poderão enfrentar severa falta de alimentos nos próximos meses. O alerta é das várias agências da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU), segundo as quais o nível de insegurança alimentar no país atingiu o ponto mais alto desde o início dos conflitos armados na região, há mais de três anos. As informações são da Rádio ONU em Nova York.

O governo do Sudão do Sul já declarou situação de fome em algumas regiões do centro-norte do país. No total, a mais nova nação do mundo tem cerca de 100 mil pessoas nessa situação. Segundo as Nações Unidas, mais de 1 milhão de pessoas estão peito de passar fome devido a uma combinação perversa de guerra civil e colapso econômico.

A declaração formal da situação de fome em áreas do país indica que já começam a morrer pessoas na que é considerada “a pior catástrofe” desde o início do conflito civil. O quadro integrado de classificação da segurança alimentar indica que 4,9 milhões de pessoas precisam de alimentos no país.

O alerta das agências humanitárias é de que a crise pode se espalhar se não houver ajuda. A Organização das Nações Unidas para Agricultura e Alimentação (FAO), o Fundo das Nações Unidas para a Infância (Unicef) e o Programa Mundial de Alimentação (PMA) querem medidas urgentes na área para evitar a morte de mais pessoas.

Sofrimento persisente

Com uma assistência adequada e sustentada, a ser dada com urgência, a situação de fome pode melhorar nos próximos meses e ser atenuado o sofrimento das vítimas, alertam as agências da ONU. Porém, se nada for feito para reduzir a expansão da insegurança alimentar, prevê-se que 5,5 milhões de pessoas possam enfrentar essa situação durante o auge da temporada de escassez, em julho próximo.

As agências revelam que os três anos de conflito prejudicaram a produção agrícola e os meios de subsistência rurais em todo o Sudão do Sul. Desde que a violência piorou, em julho passado, a produção de alimentos foi arrasada, incluindo áreas que antes eram estáveis. A taxa anual de inflação aumentou até 800%, e a falha nos mercados das áreas mais dependentes do comércio para atender às necessidades alimentares agravaram a situação.

Nas áreas urbanas, as populações tentam lidar com o enorme aumento dos preços dos alimentos básicos. Desde o início do conflito, a FAO, o PMA e o Unicef realizaram operações de socorro na região com parceiros. Em 2016, as três entidades realizaram várias campanhas em massa para atenuar os efeitos da crise humanitária.
