Pesquisadores do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi (MPEG) desenvolvem repelente à base de planta amazônica Montrichardia Linifera (nome científico da Aninga). O estudo teve inicio há 10 anos, a partir da constatação de ribeirinhos que relataram a ausência do mosquito transmissor da malária nas regiões onde são encontradas a Aninga.

A pesquisadora do MPEG  Cristina Bastos do Amarante conta que um dos fatores que motivou o estudo da aninga foram os relatos de ribeirinhos. A partir daí, a pesquisa foi levada ao laboratório e vem tendo bons resultados. ”Vimos que, realmente, os extratos desta planta inibem o crescimento dos ovos do Plasmodium Falciparum (parasita causador da malária). Repetimos os testes e começamos a ter resultados positivos,” disse.

Segundo os dados do Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia, Inovações e Comunicações (MCTIC), em 2016, 794 pessoas morreram em todo o país em consequências de doenças transmitidas pelo Aedes Aegypti, tais como a dengue, Zika e a febre chikungunya.

O MCTIC avalia positivamente a pesquisa que tem o prazo de cinco anos para ser concluída, mas que esse tempo pode ser reduzido para apenas um ano, dependendo de parcerias que financiem os estudos.
