Comprar a cesta básica em Vitória já custa meio salário mínimo, o cálculo é do Dieese. Apesar da que de 0,94% no mês de abril, a cesta na capital do Espírito Santo foi de R$ 414,26. Em abril de 2016, o tempo médio necessário para adquirir os produtos da cesta básica foi de 96 horas e 26 minutos, semelhante à jornada calculada para março, de 96 horas e 24 minutos. Quando se compara o custo da cesta e o salário mínimo líquido, ou seja, após o desconto referente à Previdência Social, verifica-se que o trabalhador remunerado pelo piso nacional comprometeu, em abril, 47,64% dos vencimentos para adquirir os mesmos produtos que, em março, demandavam 47,63%.

Com base no total apurado para a cesta mais cara, a de São Paulo (R$ 442,42), e levando em consideração a determinação constitucional que estabelece que o salário mínimo deve ser suficiente para suprir as despesas de um trabalhador e sua família com alimentação, moradia, saúde, educação, vestuário, higiene, transporte, lazer e previdência, o DIEESE estima mensalmente o valor do salário mínimo necessário. Em abril de 2016, o salário mínimo necessário para a manutenção de uma família de quatro pessoas deveria equivaler a R$ 3.716,77, ou 4,22 vezes mais do que o mínimo de R$ 880,00. Em março, o mínimo necessário correspondeu a R$ 3.736,26, ou 4,25 vezes o piso vigente.

Em abril, houve predominância de alta nos produtos da cesta nas capitais do Brasil, com destaque para batata, pesquisada na região Centro-Sul; leite; manteiga; farinha de mandioca, coletada no Norte e Nordeste; feijão e açúcar. O tomate mostrou diminuição de valor na maior parte das cidades. O preço da batata aumentou em todas as cidades do Centro-Sul onde o produto é pesquisado. As variações oscilaram entre 3,95% em Brasília e 44,66%, em Florianópolis. As chuvas reduziram a oferta da batata em várias regiões produtoras, o que aumentou o preço do tubérculo. O leite teve seu valor majorado em 26 cidades, sendo que as maiores altas ocorreram em Aracaju (16,35%), São Paulo (9,94%) e Porto Alegre (5,24%). Apenas Boa Vista mostrou redução (-6,11%). Período de entressafra reduziu a oferta e elevou o preço do leite, o que impactou também no valor dos derivados. Já a manteiga aumentou em 25 capitais, com destaque para Aracaju (10,69%), Recife (10,59%), São Luís (8,90%) e João Pessoa (7,76%). Porto Velho (-1,84%) e Rio Branco (-0,76%) tiveram redução no valor da manteiga. O quilo da farinha de mandioca, pesquisada no Norte e Nordeste, subiu em 14 capitais, ficou estável em Rio Branco e diminuiu em Aracaju (-0,46%). As altas variaram entre 2,03%, em Belém e 17,80%, em Recife. A oferta de mandioca esteve reduzida nos meses anteriores devido ao clima, e apesar da colheita voltar ao normal, a farinha ainda segue com preço alto no varejo na maior parte das cidades. O feijão seguiu em alta e 22 capitais mostraram taxas positivas. O quilo do feijão carioquinha – pesquisado nas regiões Norte, Nordeste, Centro-Oeste e nas cidades de Belo Horizonte e São Paulo – aumentou entre 0,43% em Macapá e 7,98%, em Belo Horizonte. Houve queda em Aracaju (-11,65%), Palmas (-1,03%) e Natal (-0,34%). O feijão preto, pesquisado na região Sul e em Vitória e Rio de Janeiro, teve seu preço elevado no Rio de Janeiro (2,30%),
