A catarata está entre as principais doenças causadoras da cegueira. O tipo mais comum é a catarata senil, ou seja, o envelhecimento natural do cristalino ao longo da vida. Além desse, existe também a catarata congênita, na qual o bebê já nasce com catarata (forma mais rara) e causas secundárias como o uso crônico de corticoide, doenças metabólicas, diabetes, uveítes (inflamação intra-ocular), trauma e exposição excessiva à radiação ultravioleta.

De acordo com a Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS), hoje a doença é responsável por 51% dos casos de cegueira no mundo, o que representa cerca de 20 milhões de pessoas. Segundo a Sociedade Brasileira de Oftalmologia (SIGLA), por ano surgem cerca de 550 mil novos casos no Brasil. Em 2016, mais de 450 mil pacientes fizeram a cirurgia pelo SUS e no Brasil, ela é responsável por 48% dos casos de cegueira.

“A catarata é uma doença silenciosa, que se desenvolve lentamente, dificultando a chegada de luz à retina e consequentemente reduzindo a visão. É como se você, olhasse para uma janela embaçada. Essa visão “nublada” dificulta tarefas do dia a dia, como ler, dirigir e até enxergar as pessoas”, explica o médico oftalmologista Fernando Wanna Pereira.

O diagnóstico da enfermidade é feito pelo oftalmologista através do exame de biomicroscopia acompanhado de dilatação da pupila. Outros exames complementares podem ajudar no diagnótico como: PAM (Acuidade Visual Potencial), Microscopiaespecular, Paquimetria, Fundoscopia, Mapeamento de Retina, Retinografia, OCT (Tomografia de Coerêcia Ótica), PIO (Pressão Intraocular), Ecografia (Ultrassonografia ocular), Biometria, Aberrometria ocular, entre outros.

O médico afirma que a única forma de tratar a doença é através da cirurgia que consiste em retirar o cristalino do olho e implantar uma lente artificial em seu lugar. “É fundamental que a população tenha consciência da gravidade e busque ajuda médica. Ao contrário do que pode ser dito, não existem colírios ou qualquer outro tratamento clínico para correção de nenhum tipo de catarata.”, conclui.

Ocorrência/Maior incidência: geralmente após os 60 anos

Sintomas: dificuldade de enxergar à noite ou em ambientes escuros; mudança frequente do grau dos óculos; perda da visão de contraste; e aumento da sensibilidade à luz (fotofobia).

Tratamento: cirurgia com implantação de lente intraocular

Profilaxia: dieta rica em vitamina C (frutas cítricas), carotenoides (folhas verdes), vitamina E (encontrada em gérmen de trigo e abóbora), selênio (tem na castanha do Pará), zinco (encontrado nos cereais, ostras e iogurte); outra dica é não se esquecer dos óculos com proteção UV mesmo no inverno.
